St. Vincent de Paul's Kettering Commons apartments opened in the summer of 2008 as Montgomery County's first permanent supportive housing program for families. At any given time, the program houses 14 families who have moved from the emergency shelter system into their own private apartment units. St. Vincent de Paul is the property owner and manager, and also provides on-site supportive services for the tenants.
Families eligible for this housing program have experienced chronic homelessness related to special needs, including disabling medical conditions such as mental illness, developmental disabilities, chronic substance abuse and HIV/AIDS.
A case manager and resident manager work proactively to engage the tenants in on-site and community-based supportive services including:
- On-site case management, with referrals to community service providers as needed
- Assistance in obtaining and maintaining employment
- Adult education and job training support
- Assistance in obtaining childcare
- After-school enrichment and academic programs for children
